“It´s a factory – a think-tank” Robert Wilson envisions this 6-acre site on Long Island as a cultural centre, rehearsal spaces and living quarters. The building, previously the research laboratory for Western Union, retains its function as a factory, now for artistic production. The facade evokes the design of the former structure which underlines its functionality. Flexible interior spaces can serve as dormitories, studios or galleries. Perpendicular axes open and frame views to the landscape beyond, joining interior and exterior spaces. Other structures that fit into this relationship include underground galleries, storerooms and a rehearsal complex. Commissioned by Robert Wilson, the design has been developed in collaboration with Richard Gluckman.
